Upcoming WW2 Movies
I'm a HUGE WW2 history buff and here are some tidbits on the latest movies coming out. Exciting stuff folks!
DEFIANCE trailer
===========
Set around three Jewish Poles who joined an underground resistance movement against the German occupiers. They organized a group that eventually reached 1,200 in size and hid in a village deep in the woods. This movie is scheduled to hit the theaters in the United States in Dec 2008
TALI-IHANTALA 1944
==============
Tali-Ihantala 1944, which actually has already been released in Finland. It is a Finnish movie about the Battle of Tali-Ihantala fought between Finland and Russia, with the Germans holding a major role as allies to the Finns. Looking at the trailer, it appears exciting. I hope I will be able to enjoy this in the United States some time in the future. (Trailer link bottom right of page once it loads)
VALKYRIE
=======
Based on a true story about the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler.
THE PACIFIC
=========
(the 10 episode mini-series from HBO and Dreamworks following several Marines across the Pacific theater in WW2) should be out in 2009. Latest interview with Tom Hanks revealed that they are done shooting the first 5 episodes. He also said it won't be a viewer friendly as the Band of Brothers, in that it's a very involved script.
SGT ROCK the movie
==============
Aw shucks, they shouldn't have.
The Comics Continuum chatted up screenwriter John Cox at Wizard World L.A. Cox said he's optimistic that the 'Sgt. Rock' movie, which he penned a year ago, may go into production this year.
"It's a fantastic World War 2 action/adventure with a great character," Cox told The Continuum. "It's much less Saving Private Ryan and more The Guns of Navarone."

As far as actors for the Sgt Rock movie, names that were tossed around several years ago (but are no longer candidates) were Arnold S. and Bruce Willis. Arnold was a bad suggestion obviously, an American with a strong Austrian accent = FAIL. I've not seen any new names emerge either. They should shot the movie in a style to the move 300 IMO. That would be epic.
I highly recommend a movie I just watched about a month ago through
Netflix, Army of Shadows.

Well-known for his influential crime films (LE SAMOURAI, LE CERCLE ROUGE), director Jean-Pierre Melville explores the lives of French Resistance fighters in his moody World War II masterpiece, ARMY OF SHADOWS. Restrained and controlled, the film follows Philippe Gerbier (Lino Ventura) and other members of the underground as they carry out clandestine missions against Nazi occupiers. And while there are some exciting scenes (air drops, escape attempts), the film largely avoids action-film histrionics. Its tone is a subdued one and tension results from its quiet moments, interrupted by brief, jarring violence. This is appropriate, given the film's subject matter. Silence is the guiding principle of espionage and the film's look--bruised and penumbral--reflects the tenuous position of its characters, who live divided, imperiled existences. There is no glib heroism in ARMY OF SHADOWS; there are only people living through untenable situations, acting as is necessary and sacrificing, perhaps, everything.
