Penryn benchmarks
In April at the IDF, Intel came out with some eye-popping benchmarks for their upcoming 45nm
die shrink of the Core 2 platform, a.k.a. Penryn.
Of course nobody really believed them, since the benchmarks were supplied by the company.
Today some came out from a 3rd party, and (surprise!) they confirm Intel's
numbers. This is a good thing for gamers, especially HL2-based games, where the 2.33 GHz Penryn
posted over 30% fps compared to a current 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo (E6550.)
The best gain is with power consumption, where the Penryn uses less watts at full load (59W) than
the current Core 2 Duo uses at idle (61W).
Looks like Intel's tick-tock strategy (new core every 2 years, with a die shrink in between) is
working very well. Not sure when they'll drop, but it looks like the CPU to wait for if you're thinking
about upgrading. This would make an excellent chip for the iMac's small enclosure... Bobby's string
of PowerMacs and Mac Pro towers might come to an end.

Bobby are there any word on when they will come out? or how much?
i'm pretty much ALMOST sold on getting something new ... now be it a lappy or a tower i'm not sure yet. The new 1333 3gig core 2's was what i was lookin at .. i think thats the 6750 or something.
So should i wait?
and will these new process's be moved to mobile as well?

Looks like they're shooting for a (not surprising, try to get out ahead of the holiday
buying,) but who knows if they'll pull it off.
I'd be surprised if they didn't follow with a mobile version, although if the power consumption is
that low for the 'desktop' chip, you might see some larger 'desktop replacement' laptops (17")
use the full version. The Core 2 Duo T7600 (current mobile version) draws 40W at idle, and 80W
at full load. The penryn sample is similar at idle, but much better at load.
As for waiting... There are always parts coming out with (as Nigel would say,) 'new better
technology'. If you always wait for the next best thing, you're always waiting, so my plan is
always buy the best you can get when you're ready to buy... then stop reading the tech
previews for the next year. ;)

p.s. I have an urge to head off to Passport Nissan.
